PSL suspends midweek and weekend matches

All Premier Soccer League (PSL) games that were scheduled to be played this week have been suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak, the league's chairman Dr Irvin Khoza said on Monday.

South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa declared the coronavirus pandemic a national disaster on Sunday and also prohibited a gathering of more than 100 people at a time.

Khoza further announced that a meeting between the PSL's Board of Governors and the Sports Ministry will be held on Thursday to plan a way forward for football.

The crunch league clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates that was set to be played on Tuesday has been affected as well as the game between Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits that was schedule to take place on Wednesday.

All 16 PSL clubs were slated in be in action this weekend but that also now been postponed.

Khoza urged all football fans not to travel to games and to cancel hotel bookings for this week until further notice.

Information on ticket refunds and other updates will be issued after the meeting on Thursday.
