Comitis: The league must finish
Cape Town City chairman John Comitis is adamant that the 2019/20 Premier Soccer League season has to be completed.
Most PSL club have just six or seven games left to play, while Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits both have nice matches remaining.
Comitis has suggested all teams come together in just a few venues to complete all their games, over the course of just a few weeks.
South Africa's 21-day lockdown ends on April 16, but as yet there is no indication when sports activities will be able to resume but Comitis is hopeful.
Speaking to SowetanLIVE, he said: "We might have to play a MultiChoice Diski Challenge format where there are three or four games at a single venue on one day.
"It is something that is being explored by our [PSL] chairman [Irvin Khoza]‚ and might be the best option in ensuring our players stay safe.
"The league must finish under all circumstances. Even if we jam-pack matches and have eight games in a few weeks‚ like they do at a World Cup. The level will obviously be affected‚ but we have to do what we can within our constraints."
Comitis added that even if supporter numbers are low for games, they must play on.
"Crowd attendances are not how clubs drive revenue in South Africa‚ if anything it costs us money to have the stadiums open," he explained. "We must just sustain and keep sponsors on board‚ and give them the exposure we have promised."
