Zwane says Downs must improve focus

Themba Zwane says Mamelodi Sundowns will need to improve their concentration in the CAF Champions League if they are to lift the continental trophy again.

The Brazilians beat Egyptian giants Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate in the final of the 2016 competition for their only African title to date.

They reached the semi-finals last season and made it as far as the quarter-finals this year, losing to Egyptians Al Ahly 3-1 on aggregate.

Speaking to KickOff, the Downs and Bafana winger, says it won't be long before the club are kings of Africa again.

He said: "I think we're doing well [in the Champions League], it's just those small things of losing a little bit of focus in the last minutes, and those are the things we need to improve on.

"But, overall, we're doing well and we're coming alright. We can still improve, and we also need to score more goals when we're playing at home and concede less away.

"Those are the sorts of things that will help us, [because] it helped us in 2016 – I remember when we were away, we were winning our games and we didn't concede that much."

Zwane has nine goals in 16 Premier League games this season, while he scored two in eight Champions League matches.

He continued: "This season in CAF, we were conceding too much away and when teams came this side, they would defend a lot – they parked the bus and made it difficult for us, and by the time we tried to penetrate, we conceded again and it became more difficult.

"So, these are the things we need to improve on – focus in the last minutes, try not to concede more goals when playing away and scoring more here at home."
