Kavazovic - 'Pirates deserved their win'
Free State Stars coach Nikola Kavazovic says Orlando Pirates deserved their 2-1 win over his side at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.
Stars did well to disrupt the rhythm of Pirates in the first period, so much so that the Soweto giants didn't even muster a single shot on target in the first half. But the visitors conceded two quickfire goals to Musa Nyatama and Justin Shonga shortly after the half-time break. Despite Eleazar Rodgers pulling one back for Kavazovic's side in the 80th minute, they ultimately could not do enough to claim a share of the spoils.
Kavazovic said that the superior individual brilliance of the Pirates players shone through in the end and that they were full merit for the three points.
“Congratulations to ‘Micho’ and his technical team. You can see that they are rising their form. The end of the season is coming but they are playing better and better and they are rising their form,” the Serb tactician told SuperSport TV.
“In the first half they had full domination of ball possession, I’m pretty sure it was more than 70 percent. But I must mention that in the first half we fully controlled the game. We let them to play because we wanted to let them play. We closed all the channels where they can express their superiority and we controlled all dangerous areas in our goal and they didn’t have one single shot in the first half.
“We conceded two goals in a very short period, that is why Pirates are one of two remaining contenders for the title. What is separating them and [Mamelodi] Sundowns with other teams is that they have masters in their teams. The rest of us don’t have the [kind of] players they have. Thanks to their individual qualities they scored two quick goals."
Finally, Kavazovic wished his Serb counterpart Milutin Sredojevic and his Buccanneers side all the best in their pursuit of the title.
“We made three great substitutions and the last 25 minutes we controlled the ball. We controlled the situation on the field. I can say we deserved the equaliser but the better team won at the end of the day. I wish Pirates well in the rest of the season and wish them a Champions title," added Kavazovic.
