Maritzburg United 1-0 Polokwane City
Daylon Claasen's late goal proved the difference as Maritzburg United continued their impressive run of form with a 1-0 triumph over Polokwane City at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.
The Team of Choice went into the Premiership contest aiming to claim a fourth straight league victory, while the visiting Polokwane were targeting a third win on the bounce in a bid to open a bigger gap between themselves and the dreaded drop zone.
However, the first half proved to be a bit of a drab affair, with neither team seemingly able to grab the game by the scruff of the neck.
Maritzburg created the better chances of the two sides, though, with Bongokuhle Hlongwane firing over the bar on the turn in the seventh minute, before sending an acrobatic effort wide of the right-hand post ten minutes later.
And there was one last noteworthy chance for the hosts as the first stanza drew to a close, Keagan Buchanan's deflected free-kick forcing a save from Cyril Chibwe in the Polokwane goal.
It was more of the same after the break, with goalscoring chances few and far between.
In fact, there nothing in the way of clear goalscoring chances, with the two teams cancelling each other out for much of the half.
However, Maritzburg eventually got the breakthrough they were looking for in the 82nd minute, Claasen heading home at the back post after Daniel Morgan fired an inviting cross into the danger area.
That goal proved decisive as Maritzburg were able to comfortably hold onto their slender lead and claim a valuable three points.
