Cape Town City beat SuperSport United after late Gift

A last-minute goal from Gift Links handed Cape Town City an impressive 1-0 victory over hosts Supersport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night.

The match seemed destined for a draw before Links fired in a close range effort in the 89th minute to hand the visitors all three points and lift them above Supersport on the Absa Premiership table into sixth place.

The start of proceedings was delayed by half an hour due to the threat of lightning in the area, but when things finally got underway the rain had subsided somewhat.

It was the home side that started the brighter of the two teams, although they failed to give City goalkeeper Sage Stevens any real problems.

The visitors soon made their presence felt too, Bradley Ralani firing a shot at goal that forced an acrobatic save from Ronwen Williams in the 15th minute.

Three minutes later, Williams was called upon to make another crucial save as Thato Mokeke sidestepped his opposite man and curled a shot in the direction of goal.

Supersport dominated possession and enjoyed the better of the chances for the remainder of the first half, but it was still goalless at the break.

A few minutes into the second half, James Keene found himself with a bit of time to shoot in the box, but several defenders were able to get back and snuff out the danger.

A defensive mix-up at the back nearly cost Matsatsantsa shortly after, but luckily for them Williams was once again alert to the danger.

Play was stopped in the 64th minute after Edmilson Dove suffered what looked like a nasty injury, the defender eventually being stretchered off.

City had another chance to take the lead in the 76th minute when Kermit Erasmus managed to get onto the end of Craig Martin's cross, but he couldn't find the target.

As the match drew to a close, it was Supersport piling on the pressure and going in search of what would certainly be a winning goal.

But with just one minute remaining on the clock, the visitors were rewarded for their enterprising play throughout the match as 20-year-old midfielder Gift Links took full advantage of another defensive error at the back to beat Williams at the near post and blast the ball into the back of the net, handing Cape Town City a last gasp 1-0 victory.
