The 22-year-old arrived at Anfield last year in a deal worth up to 116 million pounds, but endured a frustrating start, failing to score in his first 22 appearances while adapting to the physical demands of the Premier League and a squad that had undergone a major overhaul.

"It wasn't an easy phase," Wirtz told Sportschau. "It's sometimes good that things don't always go upwards and that you experience a dip and grow stronger because of it."

Liverpool's coaching staff implemented a tailored strength and conditioning programme to help the Germany international cope with the league's intensity, with Wirtz admitting he had to learn to better protect the ball and handle physical pressure.

"That's how I see it now - it has made me a bit stronger," he said. "I had to overcome resistance and adapt. I had to learn to become stronger and hold onto the ball."

His breakthrough finally came in late December, when he scored in a home win over Wolves - the first of six goals in a 10-game burst that underlined his quality. However, his form has since dipped again, with the playmaker currently on an eight-game goal drought.

Despite that, Wirtz's creative output has remained high, having created more than 70 chances across domestic and European competitions this season, though Liverpool's struggles in front of goal have limited his assist tally.

He showed a reminder of his ability on the international stage, scoring twice and providing two assists in Germany national football team's 4-3 friendly win over Switzerland national football team.

Wirtz also credited Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann for helping him navigate the difficult transition period.

"The coach always supported me during the difficult phase after my move to Liverpool and always had an open ear for me," he said. "He gave me tips and reassured me. That has brought us closer together."
