With England leading 2-1 and in control of the match, Beckham was cleverly provoked by Argentine midfielder Diego Simeone after a challenge, reacting with a petulant kick out that earned him a red card. Simeone's experience and gamesmanship helped turn the momentum of the contest, leaving Beckham to carry the blame after England's eventual elimination on penalties.

Four years later in Japan, Beckham completed one of English football's greatest redemption stories by calmly converting the penalty that secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina.

Remarkably, despite a career spanning more than two decades, this will be Lionel Messi's first senior international meeting with England. At 39, the Argentina captain remains the heartbeat of the defending champions as they chase consecutive World Cup titles and another place in football history.
