Simeone's experience and gamesmanship helped turn the momentum of the contest, leaving Beckham to carry the blame after England's eventual elimination on penalties.

Four years later in Japan, Beckham completed one of English football's greatest redemption stories by calmly converting the penalty that secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina.
