SuperSport TV commentator Baba Mthethwa hailed Orlando Pirates for their remarkable performance in the 2022/23 season, comparing it to Mamelodi Sundowns' campaign.

In an interview with Thomas Mlambo on Vodacom Diski Chat, Mthethwa voiced his opinion on the topic.

"Pirates had the better season," Mthethwa asserted. "The distinction lies in the fact that the reigning champions retained their core squad, making only one or two changes. On the other hand, Pirates underwent extensive alterations, signalling their intent to rise above the titleholders. They demonstrated that although not champions, they could outperform them."

Mthethwa then analysed the overall progress of both clubs, emphasizing Pirates' significant improvement over the past four to five seasons, which elevated them above Sundowns in terms of season performance.

Notably, the veteran commentator lauded Pirates' defensive capabilities, contrasting them with their fierce rivals, Kaizer Chiefs. To illustrate his point, he compared the number of goals conceded by both teams.

"While Sundowns boasted a star-studded line-up, with every player being a star in their own right, Pirates had to blend a diverse range of talents," Mthethwa observed. "They secured second place in the league, conceding fewer goals than other teams."

"At the bottom of the table, Marumo Gallants, Maritzburg United, and Swallows FC struggled defensively, whereas in the top five, Kaizer Chiefs endured a significant number of goals against them," he added.

Mthethwa further substantiated his argument, stating, "In terms of goals conceded, Chiefs were on par with relegated teams, having allowed 33 goals, while Gallants conceded 34. Chiefs lost 12 matches, while Bahlabani Ba Ntwa lost only 11 games in the DStv Premiership."

With a defensive record of 21 goals against them, Pirates possessed the second-best defence in the league, only surpassed by Sundowns, who conceded a mere 13 goals throughout the season.

Mthethwa's analysis emphasizes Pirates' exceptional season and raises questions about Kaizer Chiefs' defensive frailties. The club's success, despite undergoing significant changes, highlights their determination and ability to compete with the reigning champions.
