The defending champions remain top of the standings on 65 points from 28 matches following the 1-1 stalemate, but Orlando Pirates have closed the gap to just three points while also holding a game in hand and a superior goal difference, placing significant pressure on Miguel Cardoso's side heading into the closing weeks of the campaign.

Against Chiefs, Downs once again struggled to fully impose their usual rhythm and control. Flavio Da Silva's opener was eventually cancelled out by Brayan Leon, while Jayden Adams' late red card added to growing concerns around squad availability during a demanding period of the season.

Cardoso felt his side were repeatedly prevented from finding their flow by the physical and disruptive nature of the contest.

"When you arrive at the end and you try to remember (the game), you see one team that tried to play and another one that tried to avoid the other one playing using all the strategies that could be used: to stop the game, to make fouls, to grab," Cardoso said.

"Then, of course, (there were) a lot of emotions on the pitch from the beginning to the end."

The Portuguese coach also acknowledged that, with the title race tightening, results have now become the priority above all else.

"It's a result we need to go for in the next matches, win the matches and see what happens, that's it," said the Masandawana mentor.

Siwelele FC arrive in Pretoria sitting ninth in the Betway Premiership standings with 37 points from 28 matches in what has been a highly respectable debut top-flight campaign.

Their recent form suggests they will not travel merely to make up the numbers. Siwelele are unbeaten in five matches and recently claimed an impressive 2-0 victory over Chiefs at Toyota Stadium, with Tebogo Potsane and Sphesihle Jeza both on target.

A 2-2 draw against Durban City last time out further extended their positive run and kept alive hopes of a top-eight finish.

This will only be the second meeting between the two sides after the sides drew 1-1 earlier in the season.

For Sundowns, anything less than victory could hand momentum to Pirates at the worst possible time, particularly with a congested run of fixtures still ahead.
