Sports Kenya Director General Gabriel Komora confirmed this week that both venues will be unavailable starting February as work begins to upgrade them to international standards.

"We are commencing renovations at both Nyayo and Kasarani to make them ready for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations," Komora said according to Flashscore.

"Morocco hosted an incredible tournament, and we aim to match that level."

For Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, who have long relied on Kasarani (60,000 seats) and Nyayo Stadium respectively, the closure raises pressing questions about where top-flight matches, including the high-profile Mashemeji derby scheduled for April 26, will be played.

AFC Leopards chairman Boniface Ambani used the announcement to highlight a long-standing issue: neither club owns its stadium.

"It's high time both clubs move from their comfort zones. When you have your own facility, nobody dictates your schedule - you have control."

Ambani emphasized the urgency, pointing out that it has been more than six decades since AFC Leopards, formed in 1964, possessed a home stadium. He contrasted this with Tanzanian side Azam Sports Club, which has operated its own 10,000-seater stadium in Chamazi, Dar es Salaam, since 2010.

"Both clubs command millions of fans, yet they have not invested in proper stadiums or training facilities," Ambani added.

"It's time for fans, corporates, and private entities to step in and help create a lasting solution."

Historically, efforts have been made to secure land for stadium ownership. Former chairman Dan Shikanda previously reignited talks with the government over the 2.8-acre land near Kasarani allocated to AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia by the late President Daniel Arap Moi.

Currently, Gor Mahia tops the 18-team FKF Premier League with 40 points, while AFC Leopards sit second with 36. But with their traditional homes temporarily closed, the clubs face an uncertain period both on and off the pitch - a reminder that infrastructure remains a critical challenge for Kenyan football.
