Coming into the final as underdogs against a star-studded Mamelodi Sundowns team, no one would have dared to bet on Dikwena Tsa Meetse to go on and lift the cup.

It was a tale reminiscent of English Premier League side Leicester City's magical 2015/16 season, when they won the EPL title with relatively unknown players after securing their second successive campaign in England's top tier.

While the Carling Black Label Knockout is a cup competition rather than a league, the story feels strikingly similar to Leicester's.

For Magesi, a newly promoted team from Limpopo, it was their first-ever appearance in South Africa's top-flight league.

Under the guidance of veteran coach Clinton Larsen, and with a squad of players eager to make their mark at the highest level, Magesi managed to achieve the unthinkable with their Carling Knockout triumph.

At the start of the tournament, many expected Orlando Pirates to have an easy victory over Magesi. But to everyone's surprise, Larsen and his boys shocked the nation by going into halftime with a 3-0 lead, with Pirates attempting a comeback that fell short. The final score was 3-2 in Magesi's favor.

Next up was TS Galaxy in the quarter-finals, where Magesi triumphed 1-0 against the formidable team.

The semi-finals marked the beginning of a dream run for Magesi, and many began to believe they could go all the way when they were drawn against Richards Bay for a spot in the final. Once again, it was a hard-fought encounter, but Magesi pulled through with a 1-0 victory.

Reaching the semi-finals was already an incredible achievement for a team that had only been established in 2011.

But for many of the players, making it to the final was a dream come true, especially as it was the first time in their careers that they had reached such a stage.

Just before the final, Larsen spoke about how no one had given them a chance, drawing a parallel to when he was at Bloemfontein Celtic in 2012 and led them to a surprise Telkom Knockout (now Carling Knockout) victory, defeating Sundowns in the final.

"If you are in a cup competition, it's all about dreaming," the Magesi coach told the media a few weeks ago.

"When I was at Celtic, nobody gave us a chance to beat [Orlando] Pirates in the quarter-finals, beat Free State Stars in the semi-finals, and beat Sundowns in the final back in 2012.

"I am in a similar position now where nobody gave us a chance from day one with Pirates. Let's be honest, even you guys [the media], nobody gave us a chance."

On Saturday, at Toyota Stadium in Free State, Larsen and Magesi achieved the unthinkable, beating reigning Betway Premiership champions Sundowns 2-1 to lift the cup.

It was a result that no one expected, especially with Magesi having to come from behind after being 1-0 down at halftime to win the match.

Magesi have made history, and Clinton Larsen will forever be cherished by the team's supporters.

For now, the team is celebrating, but the main objective will be to maintain their momentum when the league resumes and continue their fight to stay in South Africa's top tier.
