Both sides made one change each for this tie with Julian Ryerson back from injury to slot in at full-back for the Norwegians while the injured Lucas Paqueta was replaced by Gabriel Martinelli for Brazil.

Norway, who haven't lost to Brazil in their four previous matches, took a fourth minute lead but the goal was correctly ruled out as Alexander Sorloth had strayed offside before he cut the ball back for Patrick Berg to fire into the roof of the net.

After the shock of Norway's fast start, the Brazilians started to string some passes together and were soon appealing for a penalty after Bruno Guimaraes was upended by Kristoffer Ajer in the box.

After a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot but Guimaraes' stuttered spot kick was denied by a strong save down low to his left from Norway number one Orjan Nyland.

Guimaraes becomes the first Brazilian to miss a World Cup penalty in open play since 1986.

Rayan was off target with a shot he put well wide of the target after a strong run, while a lax touch in midfield from Martin Odegaard led to a quick Brazil breakaway, but Vinícius Junior's cross from the left was above the onrushing Matheus Cunha.

Norway attempted to take some of the pace out of the game, after a frantic opening 20 minutes with a spell of sustained possession, but Brazil looked very dangerous on the counter.

David Moller Wolfe used all of his strength to stop Cunha from getting a shot away as he stole into the 18-yard area, while the outstretched foot of Nyland was all that stopped a good Martinelli cross from finding a teammate as the ball skipped across from the face of the goal.

Odegaard hit the side-netting on 35 minutes after a swift attack from Norway started by the lively Antonio Nusa, who's cross just a minute later was met well by Erling Haaland, but his lofted finish with his back to goal was calmly collected by Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Nyland came to his side's rescue again, with five first-half minutes remaining with a strong save at his near-post on left of the pitch, while Gabriel made an important block to deny Odegaard from a tight angle at the other end after he was played in by Haaland.

Odegaard should have done better with a shot from the edge of the area at the end of the opening period, that he shot straight at Allison, as the ball fell kindly to him after Haaland won the ball from the two centre-backs.

Ola Solbakken made two changes to his wide positions at half-time with Oscar Bobb replacing Sorloth and Andreas Schjelderup on for the lively but ineffective Nusa.

Norway were seeing a lot of the ball but without threatening, while Brazil's first attack saw Vinicius Junior win a corner that was comfortably dealt with.

With just over 30 minutes of the match remaining, the talented Endrick was brought on to take over from Cunha.

And before he could even settle into the game, the substitute was thrust into the match through a phenomenal outside of the boot pass from Vinicius Junior, but his first touch let him down and he steered the ball wide when one-on-one with Nyland.

The Norway stopper then made two sensational saves, first to deny Rayan from range before getting a hand to a Guimaraes chip, although the player was adjudged to have been offside.

Allison then got a hand to a dipping Moller Wolfe cross with Haaland lurking, while the giant striker was an inch away from getting his boot to a neat pass from Kristoffer Ajer at the back post.

With time running out for both teams, Brazil boss Carlo Ancelloti brought on Neymar for Martinelli and Danilo Santos for the teenage Rayan.

With his first involvement, Neymar won a throw, before overcooking a long pass forward, while some strong hold up play from Haaland at the other end, set up Schjelderup for a shot but Alisson was equal to the effort.

Ederson replaced Guimaraes with 10 minutes of the game to play.

But before he even reached his position, Norway were in the lead, through that man Haaland, for his sixth goal of the competition. Substitute Schjelderup beat Gabriel on the left flank and swept in an inch-perfect cross for Haaland to tower above his man and head home past a despairing Alisson.

Neymar rolled back the years with some trickery inside the box but was eventually crowded out, while Nyland was called on to save his side once again, with a fingertip save as he backpedalled to reach a deflected clearance from Ajer.

Casemiro, meanwhile, needed to show composure from a good position, just wide of the Norway goal just moments later, but he flashed his cross past the face of the goal.

Haaland though showed his class when he picked up the ball on the edge of the area, set himself, and rifled and unstoppable shot past Alisson to put this game beyond doubt, secure his side's place in the quarterfinals for the first time in their history, and send five-time World Champions Brazil packing.

That marked Haaland's sixth and seventh goals of the tournament to put him level at the top of the Golden Boot standings with Lionel Messi.

There were some handbags in the final minutes as the Brazilians struggled to get hold of the ball.

But there was still time for some more drama after a penalty awarded to Brazil for an elbow in the face of Casemiro. Neymar stepped up and stuttered, but he put his shot past Nyland, to give Brazil a very faint hope of a very late equaliser.

But it was Norway to emerge the victors from a truly pulsating World Cup knockout encounter and set up a quarterfinal clash with one of Mexico or England.
