One of the cornerstones of Spurs under Postecoglou is that the first thought is always moving the ball forward, they don't spend a lot of time passing it around the back and it can often leave their wide defenders like Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro woefully out of position when they lose possession.

However, on the other end of the spectrum, it means their attacks are brisk and deadly. They often have an overlap of players due to the tendency to bomb down the field every time they get the ball back.

As a result, they score a lot of goals but they concede more than their fair share as well and their rollercoaster of a season has already produced a plethora of interesting facts and records.

Postecoglou's Premier League career started like a house on fire. Whether teams were underestimating Spurs or the North Londoners really were playing that well, they began the season with seven wins and two draws from their first nine games.

While impressive, especially because it put them on top of the standings, the stats only tell half the story because no other manager in the history of the Premier League has managed to take 23 points from their first nine games - not Pep Guardiola, not Jose Mourinho, not Jurgen Klopp. Nobody.

Their form did dip dramatically after that, though, and they have struggled for consistent form since, leaving them desperately fighting for a place in the top four.

Manager of many months

Spurs' form at the start of the campaign did not go unnoticed, nor did Postecoglou's role in turning the team around so quickly.

He was rewarded for his efforts by being named Premier League Manager of the Month for August, September and October to become just the fourth manager in the history of England's top division to win the award three times in a row.

Unfortunately, due to the above-mentioned dip in form, he wasn't even in the running for the December award or a chance at equalling Pep Guardiola's record of four consecutive Manager of the Month awards.

Goals galore

While Spurs' results may not have been consistent through the season, one thing certainly has been: Their ability to hit the back of the net.

Cards on the table, this record did begin before Postecoglou arrived but there is no denying his role in keeping it going.

Since losing 1-0 to Wolves in March, Tottenham scored in their final 12 games of last season – even as they sacked manager Antonio Conte and then caretaker Cristian Stellini, the latter following a shambolic 6-1 defeat to Newcastle.

They finished the season with Ryan Mason in charge and have not let up this term under a fourth manager in Postecoglou, netting at least once in every game so far – 51 goals in 24 games - to add to their 24 in last season’s portion of the scoring run for a total of 75.

The 36-game scoring run is the second-longest in the history of the Premier League, matching Manchester United's run from December 2007 to November 2008, and Liverpool's from March 2019 to February 2020 and behind Arsenal's incredible run of 55 games from May 2001 to November 2002.

Spreading the goals around

When Harry Kane was still at Spurs, it was notable how a lot of their play was built around him - understandably as one of the best strikers in the world.

However, there is a strong argument that they have been better without him as more players have been allowed to step up and shine.

The 63 goals they have scored so far have come from 19 different players. Son Heung-min unsurprisingly leads the charts with 17, Kane is second with 12 and Richarlison is third on 11.

But there are plenty of other goalscorers, including Porro at right-back who has the worst goals-to-shot ratio of anyone that has scored at least one goal in the Premier League.

Postecoglou thinks blue cards will ruin football

There has been a lot of talk recently about the potential introduction of blue cards to deal with cynical fouls and dissent against the referee.

The idea behind the new card is that it is sort of a parallel yellow card that, when issued, will force the offending player to spend 10 minutes off the pitch in a sin bin similar to rugby union.

While there is no question something needs to be done about the way players rush at referees whenever they make a questionable decision, there has also been plenty of debate about the efficacy of this plan to solve the problem.

Postecoglou is firmly in the camp of not wanting this to happen, even going so far as to suggest the new cards would kill football because it would just cause teams to go into a 10-minute penalty-killing mode until they got their player back.

“One team being down to 10 men for 10 minutes, you know what it’s going to do to our game? It’s going to destroy it, mate,” Postecoglou insisted.

“You’re going to have one team just sitting there trying to waste time for 10 minutes waiting for a guy to come on.

“Every other sport is trying to declutter. All we’re trying to do is go the other way for some bizarre reason.”
