But in a country bursting with raw talent, only a handful make it to the top. The story of Orlando Pirates midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula stands as a powerful example that while talent may open the door, hard work, persistence, and patience keep it open.

Affectionately known as "Skhehli" in his hometown of Mohlakeng in Rand West, Johannesburg, Makhaula's rise in professional football was far from instant. While many players break into the top flight in their early 20s, Makhaula only got his big break at 25.

He began his football journey playing in local leagues, eventually landing at Trabzon FC, a third-tier South African team. There, under the guidance of coach Sipho Khuse - brother of Kaizer Chiefs legend Donald "Ace" Khuse - Makhaula began shaping his future while juggling the demands of part-time work and football.

His commitment eventually paid off when he joined Free State Stars in 2014 after impressing during trials. Playing alongside seasoned professionals like Paulus Masehe, he quickly adapted to the pace and physicality of top-flight football.

Over five years at the club, he became a mainstay in the midfield and helped Stars win the Nedbank Cup in 2019 - his first major piece of silverware. Unfortunately, the club was relegated the following season, but his performances did not go unnoticed.

After nearly signing with Chippa United, Makhaula instead joined Highlands Park. His stay was brief, as the club was sold shortly after his arrival. It was his move to AmaZulu in 2020 that would reignite his career. At Usuthu, Makhaula flourished. He became the heartbeat of the team's midfield and eventually its captain, leading by example with his discipline, work rate, and leadership.

His performances in KwaZulu-Natal caught the eye of Orlando Pirates, who brought him to the Soweto giants during the January 2023 transfer window. For the hard-working midfielder, it was a homecoming of sorts - returning to his home province and finally playing for one of the clubs he grew up watching and admiring.

Makhaula's Pirates debut came in a Nedbank Cup clash against All Stars FC. Though he featured in just 10 games during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign, his determination never wavered. Facing stiff competition in midfield from the likes of Miguel Timm, Thabang Monare, Siphelo Baloni, and Ndabayithetwa Ndlondlo, he fought tirelessly to secure his place.

Featuring 44 times in all competitions, he became the undisputed general in Pirates' midfield, helping guide the team in their pursuit of league and cup success.

His consistent performances and leadership on and off the pitch culminated in him being named the PSL Midfielder of the Season - a crowning personal achievement at the age of 35.
