Chiefs have been grappling with instability in their goalkeeping department in recent years, especially after veteran Itumeleng Khune was sidelined due to various issues.

Neither Brandon Petersen nor Bruce Bvuma have managed to cement their place as the clear first-choice goalkeeper. This prompted widespread calls for AmaKhosi to find a dependable shot-stopper who could fill the void left by Khune on a long-term basis.

In response, Chiefs recently announced the signing of Rwandan goalkeeper Ntwari on a four-year contract, with an option to extend.

"It definitely is a long-term commitment, in terms of our vision moving forward. We've brought in a 24-year-old national team goalkeeper with great attributes, technically gifted on the feet, and excellent handling skills," Motaung Jr said, emphasising the significance of Ntwari's signing.

"For us, as a club, we aim to bring the best quality in all departments. Ntwari has a bright future ahead of him. He's joining a setup with an amazing goalkeeper coach."

Motaung Jr also highlighted the competitive environment Ntwari was entering, mentioning the efforts of current goalkeepers Petersen and Bvuma. "Brandon and Bruce have worked hard this pre-season, and their level will be raised.

"We're looking forward to seeing what that department will bring to the fore," he added.

Petersen was in goal during the recent Toyota Cup pre-season friendly against Young Africans, a match that saw AmaKhosi suffer a heavy 4-0 defeat.

This result has only intensified the scrutiny on Chiefs' goalkeeping options. With fans questioning the reliability of Petersen and Bvuma, there is significant anticipation around whether Ntwari would assume the number one goalkeeper duties as the new season approached.

"I think everyone is starting on a clean slate; everyone has to prove themselves. No one is guaranteed a place in the starting eleven, and I think everyone is aware of that. We'll see how things develop as time goes on," Motaung Jr responded when asked about Ntwari's potential to become the first-choice goalkeeper at the club level.

The signing of Ntwari is a clear indication of Chiefs' intent to strengthen their squad and address the inconsistencies that have plagued their goalkeeping department.
