Mbekezeli Mbokazi's Man of the Match performance

The 19-year-old Orlando Pirates defender put in a composed performance against a more experienced Nigerian side full of European based stars. Mbokazi also came close to scoring after attempting to lob goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who had strayed off his line.

His all-round display against the African powerhouse drew praise from Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos.

“Mbokazi, this guy has to go to Europe,” said the Belgian coach.

"He is 19 years old, you see the way he is playing, it's like he has 10 years' experience at this level."

Mohau Nkota impresses on the wing

The new Al Ettifaq signing caused problems for the Nigerian defenders from the right wing, continuously making runs behind the defence and taking on defenders.

Nkota's cross led to William Troost-Ekong's own goal after good work in midfield from Sipho Mbule.

The former Orlando Pirates star has been in good form since making his debut for Bafana Bafana and looks set to retain his spot in the national setup.

Contentious Nigeria equalizer

Fulham defender Calvin Bassey restored parity with a controversial finish after a cross from Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Initially it looked like a legitimate header, but replays showed that the ball actually hit Bassey's arm before deflecting into the net.

Unfortunately, there is no VAR in these qualifiers and the goal stood.

Sipho Mbule embraces Bafana role

A late inclusion in the final squad following the withdrawal of Orlando Pirates teammate Patrick Maswanganyi but put up his hand in midfield against Nigeria with a spirited display.

Mbule's vision saw him release Mohau Nkota with a perfect through ball that led to South Africa's opening goal. His confidence on the ball helped get the crowd behind the home side whilst his defensive commitment was also commendable.

Strong team mentality

Bafana Bafana worked hard to deny Nigeria of clear goalscoring opportunities whilst generally keeping more possession than the visitors.

The home side looked comfortable on the ball and well balanced in their defensive approach despite playing a much more experienced team.

South Africa showed necessary aggression against their physically tougher opponent, getting three yellow cards as the players fought for possession.
