Looking at the country now, it might be hard to believe, but in the early 1990s, Zimbabwe boasted a national football team that many in Africa dubbed as a dream team.

There were several very good players but there was no doubt the squad's success was spearheaded by the brothers Adam and Peter Ndlovu.

While Adam enjoyed a successful career in Switzerland and later South Africa, Peter was destined for even greater things and became the first player from Africa to ever play in the Premier League.

Peter was born in Bulawayo but grew up in the Binga District of the North Western province of Matabeleland.

Born in February 1973, he was a supremely-talented footballer and it did not take long for him to catch the eye of scouts in Europe.

He spent his first two years as a professional at Highlanders in Zimbabwe before he signed for Coventry City, ahead of the 1991-92 season, when he was just 18 years old.

John Sillett is credited as the man who originally scouted him for the Sky Blues and convinced then-manager Terry Butcher to give him a shot.

Needless to say, it did not take long for him to make an impact.

He was starting regularly early into his first season and scored important goals against Arsenal and Aston Villa to win over the club's fans.

The next season, on 19 August 1992, Ndlovu made history by becoming the first player from Africa to play in the Premier League.

He is also credited as being a key part of their fast start to the season that would ultimately peter out to a disappointing 15th place.

He would go on to represent four different clubs in England, as well as get 100 caps for his country in what can only be described as a phenomenal and ground-breaking career.
