Makhaula has emerged as one of the driving forces behind Pirates' consistency this season, using his experience to remind teammates what is at stake as the margins at the top of the table tighten.

The Buccaneers welcome bottom-placed Magesi to Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening on the back of an impressive 11-match unbeaten league run, consisting of nine wins and two draws. Pirates are third on the log, three points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played two games more.

Makhaula admitted that the sense of urgency within the squad has pushed him to be more vocal when standards drop, particularly during training sessions.

"If I see one player not training well, I'm not scared to tell them straight," said the 36-years-old midfielder earlier this week.

"You can't afford to slack off in moments like this. For some of us, this could be the last time we are fighting for the league."

Despite the growing belief around the club, the reigning Midfielder of the Season warned that pressure and outside noise could become dangerous distractions if not handled correctly.

"I believe we can win the league, but we mustn't put pressure on ourselves," he said.

"We shouldn't focus on what other teams are doing. The only thing that matters is how we perform."

Makhaula said the hunger within the squad is visible, with younger players feeding off the experience of senior figures as Pirates attempt to close the gap on Sundowns.

Beyond the competitive drive, the league title also carries deep personal meaning for the midfield anchor, who hopes to honour his late mother, a lifelong Pirates supporter.

"It would mean a lot to win the league for my mother. She loved this club, and it would be very special to achieve that here," he said.

Makhaula also highlighted defensive improvement as a key reason for Pirates' sustained challenge this season.

"We're more solid and disciplined at the back now. If we stay humble, I really believe this season can be ours," he concluded.
