Betway Premiership Saturday wrap: Late fights, missed chances and stalemates

The Betway Premiership produced another day of tight, hard-fought encounters on Saturday, with Marumo Gallants, Richards Bay, Golden Arrows, Polokwane City, AmaZulu and TS Galaxy all sharing the spoils in a series of draws.

Marumo Gallants 1-1 Richards Bay

The Natal Rich Boys made a bright start and took an early lead, but their inability to convert further chances proved costly as Gallants fought back to claim a share of the spoils.

Richards Bay went ahead in the 10th minute through an own goal by Marvin Sikhosana. The visitors then took control of the game, with Sanele Barns at the heart of their attacking play, consistently creating dangerous moments in the final third.

Despite their dominance, the KwaZulu-Natal side failed to extend their lead, allowing Gallants to remain in contention. The hosts made an early tactical adjustment in the 30th minute, introducing Kamohelo Sithole for Christopher Sithole in a bid to shift momentum.

However, Richards Bay maintained their advantage heading into the break, enjoying superior possession and control.

Gallants returned for the second half with renewed intent, and their persistence paid off in the 60th minute when Bheki Mabuza found the equaliser to make it 1-1.

Neither side could find a winner in the closing stages, with the match ending in a stalemate.

The result leaves Richards Bay in 11th place on 33 points with two matches remaining, while Gallants remain deep in relegation trouble in 15th position with 23 points.

Golden Arrows 0-0 Polokwane City

In another Betway Premiership fixture, Golden Arrows and Polokwane City played out a goalless draw at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

The result does little to strengthen either side's push for a top-eight finish, with Polokwane City sitting sixth on 39 points and Arrows in eighth on 37 points.

The match was a tightly contested affair, with both teams showing urgency but lacking the cutting edge in front of goal.

Polokwane were reduced to ten men in the 30th minute after captain Thabang Matuludi received a straight red card. Despite the numerical disadvantage, they nearly took the lead nine minutes later, but Kambala's header went wide.

Chances remained scarce in the second half, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities as the match ended in a stalemate.

Orbit College 0-0 AmaZulu

AmaZulu missed the chance to close the gap on the Betway Premiership's top three after being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Orbit College at Olympia Park on Saturday.

Usuthu enjoyed more possession for large spells but lacked a cutting edge in the final third against a determined Orbit side fighting to avoid relegation trouble. The hosts threatened first when Siyabulela Mabele headed wide from close range before Athini Maqokolo forced a save from goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane just before halftime.

Orbit continued to look dangerous after the break through Gomolemo Khoto and Given Thibedi, while AmaZulu substitute Mondli Mbanjwa came closest for the visitors with a late effort that drifted wide.

The result leaves AmaZulu fourth on 44 points, while Orbit remain 14th, boosting their hopes of survival heading into the final stretch of the season.

TS Galaxy 1-1 Chippa United

TS Galaxy extended their winless streak in the Betway Premiership to 13 matches after fighting back to draw 1-1 with Chippa United at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.

The Rockets dominated much of the first half but were wasteful in front of goal. Junior Zindonga missed a penalty after Seluleko Mahlambi was fouled in the box and later squandered another promising opening from close range.

Chippa punished those missed opportunities five minutes before halftime when Azola Matrose picked up a loose ball near midfield, surged forward and curled an impressive finish into the top corner.

Galaxy responded quickly after the restart as substitute Victor Letsoalo converted from the penalty spot following another foul on Mahlambi. Both teams created further chances in an open second half, but neither could find a winner.

Galaxy remain 12th on the table, three points ahead of 13th-placed Chippa United.
