The La Masia graduate, who never made a senior appearance for the Blaugrana, could be set for a dramatic homecoming in 2025.

Sky Germany reported that Barcelona are actively exploring a move for Grimaldo, who has a contract with Leverkusen until 2027. The German champions would reportedly consider offers between 30 and 40 million euros for the Spaniard, whose attacking flair and set-piece prowess have made him one of Europe's top full-backs.

Grimaldo's journey began at Barcelona's famed La Masia academy, where he spent eight years from 2008 to 2016, honing his craft. After leaving for Benfica without breaking into the first team, he thrived in Portugal, earning a reputation as a creative force from the left flank.

His 2023 move to Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso saw him play a pivotal role in their historic Bundesliga and DFB Pokal triumphs, contributing 13 assists in the league alone last season.

The Valencia native has never hidden his desire to return to Spain, particularly to Barcelona. In a March 2025 interview with El Periodico de Espana, he said, "It's a goal I have. I want to return to Spain in the short and medium term, to experience playing in my country. I grew up at La Masia, the club where I developed as a player and person, and it's always been my dream to play for Barca's first team."

However, Barcelona's pursuit faces challenges. Alejandro Balde, their 21-year-old left-back, has solidified his place under coach Hansi Flick, and the club's management see little need for another player in the position.

Grimaldo's openness to other Spanish clubs adds intrigue. While he distanced himself from a move to Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid, he noted, "Football takes many turns, and you never know what can happen." Leverkusen, aware of his ambitions, may push for a contract renewal or look to cash in if no extension is agreed.

Barcelona's interest signals their intent to bolster their squad with proven talent, but whether Grimaldo's dream return becomes reality depends on Flick's vision and the club's financial maneuvering.
