Both teams were left frustrated after failing to convert decisive chances in a high-intensity clash in Algiers.

In the opening stages of the game, Masandawana were placed under pressure as MC Alger surged forward with confidence, energised by their passionate home supporters.

The hosts' aggressive start unsettled Sundowns early on, forcing the visitors to defend deeper than usual.

Despite the early discomfort, Sundowns nearly struck first through a well-worked move on the right. Marcelo Allende whipped in a teasing ball to the far post, where Tashreeq Matthews arrived unmarked but directed his effort narrowly wide - a big chance that might have changed the course of the game.

Tension grew minutes before halftime when miscommunication between Khuliso Mudau and Keanu Cupido caused chaos at the back. Cupido, in his attempt to recover, made a risky challenge that could easily have resulted in a red card, but the referee was lenient.

MC Alger almost punished the visitors immediately after, with Zinedine Ferhat beating the offside trap and lofting the ball over Ronwen Williams, only to watch his effort drop just over the bar.

After the break, Sundowns adopted a more calculated approach, trying to draw MC Alger out of their compact shape.

However, the Algerian side remained disciplined, crowding the central channels and denying Sundowns the combinations they thrive on. MC Alger continued to threaten with quick transitions, forcing Masandawana to remain alert throughout.

Miguel Cardoso's late substitutions brought renewed energy and helped Sundowns regain control in the closing stages, ensuring they left Algeria with a valuable point from a challenging away assignment.

Reflecting on the performance, Cardoso praised the character shown by his team.

"It was a beautiful match played at a high level," the Sundowns coach said after the match.

"Both teams were strong inside the pitch, and we controlled many moments. MC Alger had a good strategy closing the middle, but we adapted well."

The draw keeps Sundowns top of Group C, maintaining their advantage with two crucial fixtures still to come.
