The Soweto giants are restructuring their technical team ahead of the 2026/27 season following the departures of co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef at the end of the previous campaign. While Fernando Da Cruz has widely been reported as the frontrunner to take charge, fresh reports suggest Chiefs have also explored the possibility of appointing Yorke.

According to Sky Sports, the Trinidad and Tobago legend recently held discussions with Amakhosi regarding the role. The report surfaced as Chiefs continue evaluating candidates before making an official announcement on their technical team.

Yorke, who enjoyed a decorated playing career with Manchester United, Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers, has steadily built coaching experience since retiring from professional football in 2009. After spending time in youth development and scouting roles, he landed his first senior managerial position with Australian outfit Macarthur FC in 2022.

His spell in Australia yielded immediate success, with Macarthur lifting the Australia Cup later that year. Yorke guided the club through a flawless cup campaign and delivered the first major trophy in the club's history before leaving in early 2023.

The 54-year-old returned to international football in November 2024 when he was appointed head coach of Trinidad and Tobago. During his 17-month tenure, he led the Soca Warriors to the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup and was credited with improving standards within the national setup, although the team ultimately fell short of securing a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-offs.

Yorke is no stranger to South African football supporters, having been spotted at FNB Stadium earlier this year when Chiefs faced Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby. His presence fuelled speculation about a possible future involvement with one of the country's biggest clubs.

However, despite Chiefs' reported interest, Yorke's next destination remains uncertain. He has also been linked with the vacant Jamaica national team position and is believed to be among the leading candidates for that role following Steve McClaren's departure.

Meanwhile, Da Cruz remains strongly linked with the Chiefs job. The French-Portuguese coach is already familiar with the club after previously serving as assistant to former head coach Nasreddine Nabi before leaving for a role with the Moroccan Football Federation.

With Chiefs preparing for a campaign that includes a return to continental football after securing a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership, supporters are eagerly awaiting clarity on who will lead the team into the new season.

For now, Yorke's name adds another high-profile dimension to an increasingly fascinating coaching search at Naturena.
