The 22-year-old Wirtz, widely regarded as one of Europe's brightest talents, has emerged as Liverpool's top target. Valued at 126 million pounds by Leverkusen, his potential transfer would shatter the Reds' record for their most expensive signing and make him the priciest German player ever.

David Ornstein of The Athletic reported that Liverpool have opened formal talks with Leverkusen, with Wirtz recently spotted in northwest England exploring housing options, signaling strong intent to join the Premier League champions.

Wirtz, whose contract with Leverkusen runs until 2027, has hinted at his openness to a new challenge. "I'm definitely keen to experience something new," he said after six seasons with the Bundesliga side. His standout performances, including 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 appearances this season, have made him a hot commodity, with former Liverpool star Vladimir Smicer urging the Reds to "do whatever it takes" to secure his signature.

Adding fuel to the speculation, Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reported on X that Wirtz has given Liverpool his "final yes" after personal discussions with manager Arne Slot. "Liverpool are now preparing the official offer, and Leverkusen are optimistic an agreement will be reached shortly," Plettenberg posted, noting that Wirtz has turned down Bayern Munich to prioritize a move to Anfield.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have all but sealed the signing of Frimpong, the dynamic Leverkusen wing-back, for approximately 30 million pounds, triggered by his release clause. The 24-year-old Dutch international, who impressed despite Leverkusen's 4-0 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League earlier this season, has completed a medical and agreed to a five-year deal.

His arrival is seen as a direct response to Trent Alexander-Arnold's expected move to Real Madrid, where he will link up with former Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, who is set to succeed Carlo Ancelotti this summer.

Frimpong's attacking flair, showcased by his 23 touches in the final third during the Champions League clash, has excited Liverpool fans. "He's shown he can play through the thirds, which fits perfectly with Slot's system," a source close to the club said, highlighting Frimpong's versatility as a right-back or wing-back.

Leverkusen's CEO Fernando Carro had previously expressed confidence in retaining Wirtz, stating in April there was a "very high chance" he would stay. However, the ongoing talks with Liverpool, facilitated by the Frimpong deal, suggest a shift in momentum.

The German club faces a period of transition, with Alonso's departure to Real Madrid marking the end of an era that saw Leverkusen go unbeaten in the 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign.
