Here, Vodacom Soccer takes a look at six of the best goal fests served up in England’s top tier.

West Bromwich Albion 5-5 Manchester United - May 2013

This match holds a special place in Premier League folklore for a couple of reasons. Featuring 10 goals puts it in the top six of the highest-scoring Premier League games of all time and it also happened to be Sir Alex Ferguson's final match in charge of Manchester United.

Things began well for the Red Devils, who took a 3-0 lead inside the opening half an hour thanks to goals from Shinji Kagawa, Jonas Olsson (own goal) and Alexander Buttner.

Things got interesting around half-time as goals from James Morrison and Romelu Lukaku brought West Brom to within a single goal, before further strikes from Robin van Persie and Chicharito seemed to have put the visitors out of sight.

However, in the final 10 minutes of the match, Lukaku completed a hat-trick on either side of a Youssouf Mulumbu goal to give Sir Alex a thrilling, if hardly ideal, send-off.

Arsenal 7-3 Newcastle United - December 2012

This was a match of two wildly different halves as the Gunners and Newcastle went into half-time locked at 1-1 thanks to goals from Theo Walcott and Demba Ba.

All hell broke loose after the break, though, with the two sides trading goals in the 50th (Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain), 59th (Sylvain Marveaux), 64th (Lukas Podolski) and 69th (Ba again) minute to bring the score to 3-3. A late brace by Olivier Giroud and two more from Walcott to complete a hat-trick saw Arsenal win with relative ease...on paper.

Manchester United 8-2 Arsenal - August 2011

An absolute nightmare for Arsenal from start to finish, with consolation goals from Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie doing little to placate the pain.

United had six different goalscorers in Danny Welbeck, Nani, Park Ji-sung, Ashley Young (twice), and a Wayne Rooney hat-trick.

Not only was the heavy defeat devastating for an Arsenal side hoping to push for a shot at the title, it was also a loss that made history as their biggest defeat since 1927 and the first time they had conceded eight goals since 1896.

Tottenham Hotspur 9-1 Wigan Athletic - November 2009

A complete rout for Spurs, Wigan were never in the game.

There isn't a lot to say about this game and certainly nothing a Wigan fan might want to read - but if you are a younger fan and have heard the old guard talking about Jermain Defoe as a finisher but have never seen it in action, this is a great place to start.

The former England international hit the back of the net five times and they weren't all tap-ins either, with his good movement, deft touch and powerful finishing all coming together on probably one of his best days as a striker - for Spurs at the very least.

Peter Crouch opened the scoring, unsurprisingly with his head, and Aaron Lennon also got one after providing three assists in the game. David Bentley also scored a cracking free-kick and the goals were rounded out by a venomous finish from Niko Kranjcar.

Tottenham Hotspur 6-4 Reading - December 2007

A breathless back-and-forth encounter, a Dimitar Berbatov masterclass, another Premier League game involving Spurs and a ton of goals - this was an instant Premier League classic.

It was a great spectacle and showed off a lot of the brilliance and tragedy of Spurs at the time.

The home side took the lead through Berbatov before goals from Kalifa Cisse and Ivar Ingimarsson (rather against the run of play) put Reading ahead.

Berbatov was on hand again with a powerful finish to restore parity before the North Londoners found themselves behind once more after Dave Kitson hit the back of the net.

Seemingly a one-man band, Berbatov again brought the scores level by completing his hat-trick only for Kitson to bag the visitors’ fourth.

Tottenham finished the better of the two sides, though, with Steed Malbranque finding an equaliser to make it 4-4 before Jermain Defoe put Spurs ahead for the first time since the 16th minute. Berbatov, of course, rounded out the scoring with his fourth of the game.

Portsmouth 7-4 Reading - September 2007

Interestingly, unless you are a Reading fan, this is the same team that was involved in the 6-4 loss to Tottenham Hotspur just two months before.

Clearly not a side too focused on defending, the visitors were again giving a good account of themselves. Two goals from Benjani had Portsmouth in a good position before Steven Hunt clawed one back on the stroke of half-time.

Dave Kitson struck shortly after the break to bring things level and the game still felt fairly standard, if already a bit high-scoring, when Herman Hreidarsson put Pompey ahead again in the 55th minute.

Chaos broke out around the 70-minute mark when Benjani made it 4-2 before Niko Kranjcar extended the lead further five minutes later.

Shane Long and Ivar Ingimarsson exchanged goals in the 79th and 81st minutes, while Sulley Muntari and Sol Campbell did the same in the 92nd and 94th minutes to conclude the Premier League's highest-ever scoring match.
