The likes of Alan Shearer, Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney are household names across the world for the number of goals they scored in the Premier League.

However, not everyone gets a pat on the back for getting the ball past the goalkeeper, especially if their job was supposed to be to help him keep it out.

Vodacom Soccer takes a look at the Premier League players that have scored the most own goals in England’s top tier.

Richard Dunne - 10

The player with by far the most own goals in Premier League history is Richard Dunne. The centre-back is a former Republic of Ireland international and represented three teams in the English top flight, including Everton, Manchester City and Aston Villa.

He also won 80 international caps and scored eight times (in the right goal) for his country, so this is no indictment on his skill as a footballer.

But his total of 10 Premier League own goals is three more than anyone else in history.

He is currently a television pundit for TNT Sports.

Jamie Carragher - 7

A one-club man for his entire career, Jamie Carragher scored all of his own goals while playing for his boyhood team Liverpool. The versatile defender played most of his games at centre-back but proved adept when he was deployed at full-back as well.

His post-football career with Sky Sports has made him possibly one of the most famous (and outspoken) Liverpool fans in the world - but there are at least seven moments of his career with the Reds that he probably wants to forget.

Phil Jagielka - 7

Recently retired at the age of 41, Phil Jagielka was a tireless defender who would never have been accused of putting in a lack of effort. He played a few minutes as goalkeeper after an injury crisis during his time at Sheffield United.

He made 376 appearances in the Premier League, had a professional career that lasted 23 years and made 40 international appearances for England - so maybe a haul of seven own goals isn't that bad.

Martin Skrtel - 7

Martin Skrtel is the only player in the top four still playing, although he is no longer at the highest levels of European club football - which isn't that surprising given that he is 38 years old.

His 242 games for Liverpool are what we are most interested in, where he played predominantly as a centre-back and scored a not un-impressive seven own goals.

The good news is that he scored 16 league goals for the Reds so he is technically in the positive overall. The powerful defender also played 104 times for Slovakia, scoring six times.
