Elsewhere, Bruno Guimaraes underlined his value with a game-changing contribution for Arsenal, Florian Wirtz's Liverpool struggles continue, Crystal Palace still have defensive issues to address, Brighton strengthen their European credentials and Tottenham show signs of progress under Roberto De Zerbi.

Here are the five key talking points from Matchweek 6.

1. Manchester City thrive amid the hostility

Manchester City faced a hostile reception at Anfield following an independent commission's guilty verdict on multiple breaches of Premier League financial rules. However, Enzo Maresca's side responded with a convincing 3-0 victory over Liverpool.

Goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki secured the win, with City taking control after Ryan Gravenberch's dismissal.

The result reinforced their title credentials, but the controversy surrounding their case is unlikely to disappear while their appeal remains unresolved.

City appear capable of using the hostility as motivation, but whether they can maintain that mentality throughout a season of increasingly hostile away trips remains to be seen.

2. Florian Wirtz's Liverpool struggles continue

Liverpool's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City highlighted their struggles against elite opposition, while Florian Wirtz again failed to make a decisive impact.

The German arrived at Anfield with huge expectations after starring for Bayer Leverkusen, but he has struggled to reproduce that influence consistently in the Premier League.

Questions are growing about whether Wirtz deserves to remain in the starting line-up, with his contribution in the final third falling short of expectations.

Adapting to a new league takes time, but Liverpool need their expensive attacking recruits to deliver if they are to challenge for the title. Wirtz's response to the growing scrutiny will be worth watching.

3. Bruno Guimaraes is proving his worth in gold for Arsenal

Bruno Guimaraes showed exactly why Arsenal made a major investment in the Brazilian midfielder, delivering a game-changing contribution in their 2-1 comeback victory over Leeds.

His decisive impact helped turn a difficult afternoon into three valuable points, underlining his ability to influence matches when his team need him most.

With the Premier League title race expected to be tight, Guimaraes' quality, energy and knack for delivering in key moments could prove invaluable to Arsenal's ambitions.

4. Brighton emerge as Champions League contenders

Brighton strengthened their European ambitions with a 2-0 win over Sunderland, despite playing the final 33 minutes with 10 men.

The Seagulls have also beaten Arsenal and Aston Villa this season, suggesting their strong start is no coincidence.

Brighton have continued to progress despite losing experienced figures in the recent transfer window, with Danny Welbeck departing and James Milner retiring. Their early performances indicate the squad has adapted well.

Sitting fifth after six matches, Brighton have a realistic opportunity to challenge for a Champions League place, particularly if the Premier League secures five qualifying spots.

Maintaining that form over a full season will be difficult, but their results suggest they should not be underestimated.

5. Tottenham show signs of progress under Roberto De Zerbi

Tottenham's 1-1 draw at Manchester United offered encouraging signs under Roberto De Zerbi, despite their continued wait for a league victory.

Spurs created several opportunities at Old Trafford but were let down by their finishing. Even after Rodrigo Bentancur's dismissal, they continued pushing and earned a point through Dominic Solanke's stoppage-time equaliser.

The performance showed the determination De Zerbi wants from his players, although Tottenham still need greater consistency and composure in front of goal.

The Italian has described his team as a work in progress, and the draw offered evidence that his ideas are beginning to take hold.

Tottenham must now turn those encouraging performances into victories if they are to make meaningful progress this season.
