Kane first won and converted a penalty after being brought down by Moises Caicedo, before sealing the win with a composed curling finish following Malo Gusto's misplaced pass. Trevoh Chalobah had earlier turned into his own net to give Bayern the lead, while Cole Palmer marked his 100th club appearance with a fine strike into the top corner to briefly restore hope for the visitors.

Chelsea started brightly, creating chances through Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez, but their wastefulness in front of goal and lack of composure at the back proved costly.

Bayern, securing a 22nd consecutive win in their opening Champions League fixture, were led by 39-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in his 151st appearance in the competition. By contrast, Chelsea's entire squad had only 117 combined appearances at this level.

Tah was booked after an off-the-ball clash with João Pedro while the pair chased a pass in behind Bayern’s defence. The defender appeared to swing an arm into Pedro’s throat, leaving the Brazilian forward down on the turf.

"For me it's a clear red card," Maresca said. "When there is not an intention to go for the go for the ball, just to kick the player, why is it not a red card? It's not aggressive enough the referee said. To give a red card, they need to see blood? For me the intention was to injure so there's no doubt."

Bayern manager Vincent Kompany however, saw things very differently.

"I wanted a foul the other way - I thought he was fouled," Kompany said. "I might be biased. I think his shirt got pulled and was tried to free himself and so as a defender, you just want to shake him off.

"Overall, I don't want to discuss it too much but it's not in my opinion that big an event in that sense."

Kane said to DAZN: "Amazing result. It was a tough game against a really good side. We said before the game they're club world champions. We had it to be on it from the start and we were.

"In the second half we created the better chances and it was good to get that second goal. As the game went on it felt like they got more tired, spaces opened up and we were able to exploit that.

"We talked a lot about when other teams try to play, we're only two or three seconds from having a chance ourselves. It fell to me in a nice place and was a good finish."

Chelsea now face Benfica at Stamford Bridge in their next group match, a fixture that could coincide with the return of Jose Mourinho as manager at the Lisbon club. The Portuguese coach is widely expected to be appointed in the coming days.
