Affectionately known as "Skhehli" in his hometown of Mohlakeng in Rand West, Johannesburg, Makhaula's rise in professional football was far from instant. While many players break into the top flight in their early 20s, Makhaula only got his big break at 25.

He began his football journey playing in local leagues, eventually landing at Trabzon FC, a third-tier South African team.
