Nyandoro and Choruma grew up in Mzilikazi, one of the city's iconic high-density suburbs, where their love for football shaped careers that would later serve Zimbabwe with distinction, Herald Online wrote.

Choruma passed away on December 29, 2020, at the age of 42, but his legacy continues to resonate within the football fraternity.

The former AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder recently launched the Esrom Nyandoro Foundation at a gala dinner in South Africa on December 13, marking a significant step in his mission to uplift young lives through education and sport.

In a heartfelt message shared on his Facebook page on Monday, Nyandoro explained that Choruma’s children would be supported directly by him, rather than through the foundation’s structures.

"Dear Richard Choruma, firstly I miss you my friend," he wrote, per Herald Online.

"I know you would have been the biggest supporter of the Foundation. Does it make sense that I have launched an education fund and your children are not beneficiaries, yet you served our city and our country through the most auspicious sport in the world?"

Nyandoro admitted that football had defined much of his life but said he felt morally compelled to act in honour of his late friend.

"In my personal capacity, I will ensure that your children are educated fully, as per your wish," he added.

"Thank you for sacrificing everything for football, but most of all, thank you for loving us all. I was blessed to have you in my life. Rest well, my friend."

To support his fundraising efforts, Nyandoro has made personal sacrifices by selling treasured memorabilia from his playing days. Signed and framed jerseys have already raised R50 000, with proceeds directed towards school fees.

One historic jersey remains on auction — the shirt Nyandoro wore when he scored a famous goal etched in African football history. The jersey has attracted a R120 000 offer so far and is officially valued at R200 000, with the full amount earmarked for January 2026 school fees.
