The result sees Pirates move to 48 points after 21 matches, but their position at the top of the standings is now under serious threat. Second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns trail by just one point and still have a game in hand, having played only 20 matches so far this season. That advantage means the defending champions could leapfrog the Buccaneers when they play their next league fixture.

For Siwelele, the point away from home will be welcomed as they continue their push to climb into the top half of the table. The Free State outfit now sits in 11th place with 23 points from 20 matches.

Fully aware of the importance of securing maximum points in the title race, Pirates started the match at a high tempo, pressing forward in search of an early breakthrough. Their attacking intent quickly placed the visitors under pressure in the opening exchanges.

Oswin Appollis was at the heart of Pirates' attacking play, with the Bafana Bafana midfielder orchestrating several promising moves. In the ninth minute, he forced Siwelele goalkeeper Ricardo Goss into a sharp save after unleashing a powerful effort from distance.

Pirates continued to dominate possession and territory, while the visitors were forced to defend for long periods. Yanela Mbuthuma nearly broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when he attempted an audacious back-heel inside the box, but his effort narrowly sailed over the crossbar thanks to Goss' finger tips save.

The Siwelele keeper remained busy between the posts and produced another impressive save five minutes later to deny Lebone Seema's header. The ball fell kindly for Nkosinathi Sibisi from close range, but the defender failed to take advantage of the opportunity.

Despite spending much of the first half on the back foot, Siwelele capitalised on their chance when it came. After Chibuike Ohizu had earlier missed their first real opportunity, a defensive lapse from Pirates allowed former Buccaneers forward Vincent Pule to punish his old side with a well-taken goal in the 29th minute.

Pirates responded by increasing the pressure before halftime. Thalente Mbatha fired a powerful long-range effort that forced another excellent save from Goss, while Tshepang Moremi was unable to convert the rebound as the visitors carried a 1-0 lead into the break.

The Buccaneers found their equaliser shortly after the restart. Just seven minutes into the second half, Moremi produced a low finish that finally beat Goss to make it 1-1.

Pirates continued to push for a winner, creating several chances through Relebohile Mofokeng and Moremi, but Goss stood firm.

Even after a late goalmouth scramble, a Mofokeng header and Evidence Makgopa's acrobatic attempt in the closing minutes, Pirates were unable to find the decisive goal as the spoils were shared.
