Bafana Bafana will need to bounce back from their opening match 2-0 defeat to Mexico last week in order to keep their hopes of advancing through the group stage alive.

The team will have to step up to the occasion and below we have listed five things Hugo Broos and his squad will need to be wary of.

Set-piece threat

The Czech Republic are heavily reliant on set-pieces, with 11 of their 21 goals in the 2025/2026 FIFA World Cup European Qualifiers coming from set plays, including seven from corners, the highest in the competition.

The height difference could play a major role in the clash, with Bafana squad averaging a height of 1.78 meters while the European nation soars at 1.84 meters.

Hugo Broos may have to alter the defensive pairing based on height to avoid being dominated aerially, which may even mean shifting Mbekezeli Mbokazi to the left-back position to accommodate a taller centre-back duo.

A total of eight Czech stars play their domestic football in the top seven leagues in the world, while Bafana has only five players playing their football abroad, with three of them accumulating less than ten caps.

South Africa will have to ignore the noise around the quality of the 43rd ranked Czech Republic, despite being placed 16 spots behind the European nation.

Big match temperament

Bafana Bafana have failed to reach the form that saw them attain bronze at the African Cup of Nations 2024 while also almost letting their World Cup qualification slip to Benin in the latter stages of the qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Czechia have shown grit in the qualifiers, reaching the global showpiece after defeating Denmark on penalties following a 2-2 draw.

The European side has struggled against higher ranked opposition, but they have managed to regularly defeat nations ranked lower than them, however, they are yet to win against an African side, having previously lost to Ghana in 2006.

South Africa have won two (Slovenia, France) of their four fixtures against European teams at a World Cup.

The players mindset approaching the fixture will be a key aspect.

Kick-Off time

The South African squad will be more acclimatized to playing during the day ahead of their midday clash on Thursday (18H00 SA time), with many players coming from the Betway Premiership, where most big matches are played in the daytime.

The players should have adjusted to the altitude by now and will be prepared to run hard in the American sun if they want to get a positive result against a Czechia side that is used to colder temperatures in Europe.
