With bragging rights and valuable league points at stake, both teams will be looking to their key performers to deliver when it matters most in one of South African football’s biggest fixtures.

Although derby encounters are often decided by collective effort, individual brilliance could make the difference, with several players on both sides capable of changing the outcome.

Here, we look at five players from each team who could steal the show.

Orlando Pirates

Tshepang Moremi

The Bafana Bafana winger has been one of Pirates’ most dangerous attacking outlets this season. His pace, trickery and ability to take on defenders make him a difficult opponent to contain. Moremi has featured in 10 matches across all competitions, scoring six goals and providing one assist. His attacking threat could cause Chiefs plenty of problems.

Mpho Padime

The youngster has emerged as one of the exciting prospects from Pirates’ development structures. His confidence, silky skills and attacking instincts have impressed, while his goal against African Stars in the CAF Champions League demonstrated that he can also deliver in front of goal.

Evidence Makgopa

Makgopa’s physical presence, aerial ability and work rate make him an important attacking option. His ability to occupy defenders, hold up the ball and create space for teammates could be particularly valuable in a physically demanding encounter.

Thapelo Mokobodi

Despite being a new arrival, Mokobodi has established himself in the Pirates midfield. His composure, technical ability and contribution to the build-up play have helped the Buccaneers launch attacks. With two goals and two assists, he also offers an attacking threat.

Lebone Seema

Seema has settled into the Pirates defence impressively since joining the club. His composure, strong tackling and defensive awareness have helped bring stability to the backline. He could have an important role in containing Chiefs’ attacking threats.

Kaizer Chiefs

Wandile Duba

Duba heads into the derby full of confidence after scoring a hat-trick in Chiefs’ Carling Knockout victory over TS Galaxy during the week. His goalscoring instincts and movement in the final third make him one of the players Pirates will need to watch closely.

Mfundo Vilakazi

The young attacker possesses impressive technical ability, creativity and an eye for goal. Like Padime at Pirates, Vilakazi represents the exciting young talent emerging at Chiefs and will be eager to make his mark on the biggest stage.

Rushwin Dortley

Dortley could be central to Chiefs’ attempts to keep Pirates’ attacking players quiet. His reading of the game, composure and ability to make timely interventions will be important against a Buccaneers side boasting considerable attacking firepower.

Mduduzi Shabalala

Although some supporters believe Shabalala is yet to reach his full potential, the attacking midfielder has shown glimpses of his quality. His creativity and ability to produce decisive moments make him a player Pirates cannot afford to underestimate.

Lebohang Maboe

Maboe has been among Chiefs’ consistent performers this season. Despite missing a penalty in their CAF Confederation Cup campaign last week, his experience, intelligence and ability to influence proceedings make him an important figure. Saturday’s derby presents another opportunity for him to make a statement.
